Fourth of July Weekend

Much to my surprise we had a four day weekend at home together. I had no idea Alex had Monday off until late last week. After having a few busy weekends in a row it was nice to have a low-key weekend just the three of us. The icing on the cake was the weather – it was basically perfect all weekend long.

4th of July

My weekend kicked off a day early – Ben and I had a really fun Friday hanging out in Madison Park, the neighborhood just north of us. It has a much bigger downtown than our neighborhood and it’s got a great beach and a really nice park. Ben and I started at the beach, stopped at the swings and then grabbed a bite to eat at the deli.

20170630_182109685_iOS

Not surprisingly, Ben loved the beach! He loved playing in the sand and sitting in the water, feeling the waves crash on his little legs. He was all smiles! 🙂

Ben_Madison Park

We had a laid-back day on Saturday and somehow Alex and I managed to make it to yoga at the gym. It was so nice to start the weekend with a relaxing yoga class! Alex took Ben to the pool afterwards, too, so they had some fun in the water together.

Lately we have been loving taking Ben up to the park in our neighborhood and setting out the picnic blanket and just hanging out. He has been practicing standing on his own and for some reason seems to be more comfortable in the grass. While we were at the park over the weekend he stood up from a seated position all on his own without holding onto anything! Since then we’ve seen him do it several more times but it seems like he’s still realizing that he can do it.

Since I had so much fun taking Ben to the beach on Friday we decided go together over the weekend too. Ben was practicing standing on the picnic blanket at the beach too and is really getting the hang of it. He had so much fun!

We made an impromptu trip over the mountains to Leavenworth on Monday. It was super spontaneous and last minute and we had a great time. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky which made for a spectacular drive over the mountain pass. We are so fortunate to live in such a beautiful state!

20170703_002451108_iOS

One of our favorite things to do with Ben is to share foods that we love with him. Thankfully he has similar tastes to us so usually he enjoys them. While we were in Leavenworth we stopped at one of our favorite sausage shops and got some sausages and a pretzel. Since it was 90 degrees and a fun, bonus day we treated ourselves to some gelato before we made the drive back home.

20170704_013604744_iOS

All weekend long we had been looking forward to our plans for the fourth – we headed up to our friends’ Carrie and Patrick’s new house on Camano Island. Camano Island is located a little over an hour northwest of Seattle and is an island, connected by a bridge, out in Puget Sound. Carrie and Patrick moved into their new house two weeks ago and we couldn’t wait to see their new place.

20170704_181905645_iOS

Our friends Ryan and Mary joined us up north with their 19 month-old twin boys, August and Oliver, and Carrie and Patrick have a 14 month-old daughter named Roslyn. It was so fun to have all four babies together for the day. We loved Carrie and Patrick’s new house and hope to spend a lot of time up there with all of our kiddos.

It was sad to see such a nice long weekend come to an end, but we’ve got a short work week and another weekend at home coming up. I love July – it seems like such a nice, relaxing family month. This year anyway!

Ben’s One Year Photo Shoot

We recently had a little family photo shoot in honor of Ben turning one. I charged our photographer with capturing our family in a very natural way – playing at the park, walking through our neighborhood and eating ice cream. While ice cream isn’t a part of Ben’s everyday life, taking walks through our neighborhood and going to the park both are! I think Kim did a fantastic job of capturing our life right now so perfectly…

California Trip!

Alex and I recently returned home from a long weekend getaway to northern California. Before we ventured down the road to parenthood we said that once we have kids we want to make sure we’re prioritizing our marriage and taking time for the two of us. Now in our second year of parenthood I think we’re doing pretty well with that – most weeks we go out for a date night and we now have our first big trip under our belts.

20170622_230442717_iOS

Our trip included a very full itinerary – we spent the first day exploring San Francisco, a town neither one of us had ever been to.

20170622_204755874_iOS

We quickly came to adore San Francisco – we loved the architecture, the culture and what an urban city it felt like.

20170622_210621056_iOS

Our hotel was in Nob Hill/Union Square, right on the cable car line. Once we got settled we hopped on the cable car and headed for Ghiradelli Square, where we a nice, relaxing lunch by the water.

20170622_203545119_iOS

We timed our stop over at the Golden Gate Bridge viewing point aptly – not 10 minutes after we arrived the fog rolled in on what was otherwise a perfectly clear, sunny day. The fog came in so quick and thick that you couldn’t even see across the bay.

20170622_231212355_iOS

That evening we checked out Tonga, a tiki bar in the Fairmont Hotel, before heading up to the 19th floor and enjoying a light meal {and expansive views} at Top of the Mark.

20170623_013443050_iOS

We were sad to only have such limited time in SF and have added it to our “must return” list. We can’t wait to come back to explore the neighborhoods and the food scene.

20170623_170753129_iOS

After our half day in SF we packed up, hopped in our cute BMW convertible that we rented and headed north for Napa! We opted to stay in Sonoma County, as we had heard that it was more low-key and laid back, which is typically our style. Even so, we wanted a taste of Napa while we were there.

20170622_200820371_iOS

Napa and Sonoma counties are so overwhelming and contain SO many wineries that never having visited it was a difficult trip. Thankfully, our friend and wine bar owner, Henri, offered us some suggestions. Boy were we glad we took him up on them!

20170623_180959036_iOS

As we were approaching Napa both Alex and I were pointing out all of the beautiful houses and the cute shops on the street. I was surprised to find so many similarities to Batavia and Geneva, Illinois, where Alex’s parents live. I think the river running through the towns make them feel really similar.

After our quick stop off in Napa at Oxbow Market {aka paradise} we headed a little farther north to Yountville. We did our first tasting of the trip at Jessup Cellars. Our host was a hoot – she gave us some really fun tastes of different cab sauvs and an incredible old cab franc. Our trip was off to a good start!

20170623_192559550_iOS

20170623_190018678_iOS

We took a quick jaunt through the adorable, quaint town of Yountville before our divine lunch at Bouchon. Since we couldn’t get a reservation at The French Laundry we figured another Thomas Keller restaurant would suffice. Holy cow were we right.

20170623_195929269_iOS

20170623_195312693_iOS

Bouchon was truly a sensational meal. The ambiance was delightful – I loved the cute red and white bistro chairs out on the terrace. Our server was spot-on with his recommendations and professionalism. And the food, oh, the food! There was nothing to be desired at the end of our meal. Alex even suggested that his meal, a brown butter pork schnitzel with mashed potatoes and capers, was the best thing he’d ever eaten. It was fantastic. I’d love to learn how to replicate it!

20170623_201824785_iOS

20170623_215551298_iOS

Of course after Bouchon we had to stop at Bouchon Bakery for some coffee and macarons for our drive west to Healdsburg, where we were staying. The drive took quite a while, as it was through the mountains and some heavy traffic. I swear we made 100 hairpin turns as we came up and over the mountain. It was a gorgeous drive and it was SO fun to be driving in a cute BMW convertible.

20170623_215704361_iOS

Healdsburg was our home base for the next two nights. We stayed at Hotel Les Mars, a Relais and Chateaux hotel, which according to the 20 year-old receptionist, should have been on our bucket list {I guess now we can check it off!}. Aside from the snooty and inexperienced service at the hotel we loved our experience – it is a beautiful property and our room was lovely.

Saturday morning brought sunshine, coffee and wine! We were surprised to find out that our hotel included a room service continental breakfast – we happily ordered some coffee, yogurt and croissants.I could really get used to breakfast in bed!

20170624_153554043_iOS

We had two wine tasting appointments lined up for Saturday. Our first was at Jordan Winery. Our tasting included their signature chardonnay and cabernet sauvignons and were paired with some cheese and caviar. The wine was wonderful and we really enjoyed the pairings. The winery has a very big and captivating story behind it and in the 41 years they have been making wine they have had the same winemaker. We learned that while money can’t buy you happiness, it can buy you everything you need to make world-class wine.

The second tasting was at Gary Farrell. Their tasting space is under construction so they created a “woodland tasting” experience where they build glamping-style tents for their private tastings. It was a fun experience, though the view left much to be desired. We were paired with a rowdy group and really enjoyed them. The wines we tasted were chardonnay and pinot noir. Alex and I really enjoyed the pinots but were not feeling the chardonnay.

On our last day we opted to head over to the coast and take Highway 1 south back to SFO. Our drive was much different than we expected – we both had imagined the coast highway to boast big, bright blue skies and seas, like what you see on TV. We expected cute little beach towns and lots of obvious places to stop along the way. None of that was really true – it looked so similar to the Oregon and Washington coasts, with gray skies, fog and giant rock features protruding out of the beaches.

Our time in California wine country was wonderful. We soaked up the sun and enjoyed incredible wine and hospitality {and not-so-good hospitality!}. When all was said and done, we preferred our experience over on the Napa side. We received significantly better service and loved the style a bit more. We absolutely loved San Francisco, too, and really hope to be back one day soon.

20170625_182622944_iOS

The trip was really meaningful, though we missed Ben tremendously. We knew he was in good hands with his grandparents, but we still missed him. It didn’t help that there were little tots roaming around wine country everywhere we turned. We were so happy to be home and reunited with our little boy.

Mondays and Fridays

Right now I work on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, which leaves me home with Ben on Mondays and Fridays. I absolutely love my days at home with him.

{Oops! Accidental twinning!}
{Oops! Accidental twinning!}

I usually plan something to get us out of the house every afternoon, and conveniently, I have a lot of friends who don’t work on either Mondays or Fridays which makes it easy for play dates.

20170619_192708657_iOS

I am SO excited for our summer. The weather in Seattle over the summer is basically perfect and our options are endless. This week we met my cousin’s wife, Heidi, and their daughter, Claire, down at a park on the lake for a leisurely walk and to catch up. Ben and I had a few extra minutes so we set up our handy dandy picnic blanket {I’ve started keeping one in the car!} and watched the great blue herons, the ducks, the boats and the beautiful mountain and just hung out.

20170619_192457317_iOS

This fall my work hours are going to increase so I’ll only be home with Ben on Fridays. The change will only be for the school year, then I’ll drop back down to three days per week in the summer. I had gotten to a point with only working three days per week that I wasn’t feeling very effective at my job and it was leaving me overwhelmed and with too many things left undone at the end of every week.

20170616_223343343_iOS

It was a really hard decision – I was strongly considering stopping working altogether, but I really love my job and I do want to work. I  want to be effective and make my time away from Ben worthwhile. Also, it’s nice to have a break and have someone else take over for a little while.  I think it will be a good transition for us. Our nanny will be able to be more full-time with our family instead of bouncing between two families each week. I think it will be a positive change for us and I look forward to feeling like I’m making a more meaningful impact at work.

{Ben with his nanny - they were twinning too!}
{Ben with his nanny – they were twinning too!}

Until the fall, I am looking forward to taking Ben to the beach, having more time on our picnic blanket. spending time at the park, going for long walks and goofing around with him. He’s the best kid we could have asked for.

The Happenings

All is well over here in our little house. It sure feels like June in Seattle – the weather can’t decide if it should be summer or winter {thankfully this next week it’s feeling like summer}.

20170610_195958801_iOS

We have been enjoying the nice days by throwing a picnic blanket down in our backyard or heading up to the park to hang out in the grass, lounge in our “blob” or push Ben on the swings. We are so grateful to have an incredible park so close to our house.

20170610_201000647_iOS

Mr. Ben is doing so well. He is getting several teeth right now and seems to be over the painful part of teething {he has 3 teeth + at least 3 are coming in on top}. I’m happy to finally be able to say that he is eating really well and the amount of milk he is drinking every day is dropping significantly, which is really important at this point.

20170608_144513319_iOS

In the last few days he has been eating SO MUCH FOOD. It’s been so fun to watch him develop favorite foods and preferences with what he eats. Right now, meat is at the top of his list. Cottage cheese and any dairy products are a close second. Last night he tried BBQ beans and some sides from our BBQ dinner and he was in heaven! He is his father’s son for sure.

20170619_181211592_iOS

It is so fun to continue to see Ben’s personality emerge. He is so expressive, happy and curious. He loves making people laugh and smile, which is easy to do when he flashes his 3 teeth at you and cackles his sweet giggle. He has been clapping his hands and waving and it really couldn’t be cuter to watch.

20170616_165830300_iOS

Sleep has been something that we’ve really been working on with Ben lately. Ben has been sleeping really well for the last couple months, but we found out that he wasn’t getting enough sleep overnight. The doctor wanted him to be sleeping more like 12 hours, rather than the 10 he was consistently getting. It wasn’t the end of the world that he wasn’t sleeping more, but we had been wondering too and have been working on putting him to bed at 7 p.m. instead of 8. So far it’s going really well and the last few nights he’s averaged 11 hours overnight, but his naps have shortened a bit. It makes me curious if he was getting the right amount of sleep already!?

20170618_155709000_iOS

Since he turned one we’ve been able to give him a lovie in his crib to cuddle with and that has been making bedtime, naptime and anytime that he wakes up unexpectedly much, much easier. He curls up with his little monkey lovie and often times goes right back to sleep. I haven’t ever had the heart or the stamina to let Ben “cry it out” and I’m so impressed with how well he’s transitioning to putting himself to sleep lately very peacefully and calmly.

20170619_205348496_iOS

We’ve been getting out on more runs – it turns out no one goes to the arboretum at 7:30 in the morning so we’ve had the place to ourselves lately! It’s hard to make the time to exercise regularly, though having a jogging stroller and the ability to take Ben and Jackson on runs makes it infinitely easier.

20170616_175725038_iOS

One of Ben’s “homework” assignments from his 12 month checkup at the doctor was for Ben to hide things. We really weren’t sure what that would look like and sure enough within a week of his appointment he started hiding books around his room. It started with a book under his bookshelf, then he slid a few books under the chair {and crawled under there himself!} and today he hid some books under his crib. It’s pretty amusing to watch him become a little mischievous boy!

Alex finally broke down and bought a car last month. Since we moved to Seattle nearly nine years ago we have only had one car between the two of us. We’ve managed to make it work just fine, though now that we’ve got Ben it makes it more challenging, not to mention it limits Alex’s flexibility tremendously.

20170620_023130381_iOS

Alex has been fortunate enough to take transportation provided by his work which is why we were able to make it work with only one car. In any case, we’re officially a two car family. I’m hoping that we will ease into a new routine that makes it easier for Alex to get to the gym and also be home for our now early dinners.

20170616_013531532_iOS

I had a goofy schedule last week and it allowed me a day off of work while our nanny was with Ben. I felt like I was running around doing errands for most of the day, but I did manage to squeeze in some time to get some new plants for our retaining wall. I’m really happy with how they turned out. Hopefully I can keep them alive and that they survive the terrible soil and growing conditions in which I planted them.

20170614_223725609_iOS

In addition to never ending yard work, we have a busy summer with several trips {mostly that Alex is taking} and much to look forward to. Next up is our adults-only trip to California!

Little Victories

For me, a big part of parenting is celebrating the little victories along the way. I think whenever we’re faced with a challenge, whether small or great, it gives us the opportunity to figure out how to overcome it gracefully {or not so gracefully!} and think outside the box. This last weekend while Alex was out of town included a lot of little victories.

20170601_134236316_iOS

One of my most memorable little victories happened early on – Alex had just gone back to work and I was home by myself with Ben. I wanted to meet some other moms/babies from our parents group downtown at a music class and it was my first big outing by myself with Ben. It ended up going so smoothly that I was confident enough to schedule an impromptu lunch meet-up with my friend Ali that afternoon. That little boost of mom-confidence set a lot of mom-growth in motion for me.

20170605_165532155_iOS

It is quite a challenge to walk our dog and Ben at the same time. While I usually take both of them for a walk in the evenings, I’m not usually the one who is in charge of wearing the dog out in the morning. As a way to streamline exercising the dog, getting the baby some fresh air and the mama some exercise too I went out and bought a new leash for Jackson that I could tie around my waist. Ta da! Hands free for pushing the running stroller and we kill 3 birds with one stone!

20170604_143659832_iOS

During Alex’s four-day trip to Las Vegas I managed to get out on two early morning runs through the Arboretum with Jackson and Ben. Since I was all about celebrating my victorious weekend I concluded the second run with a stop at the French bakery. Ben had his first croissant and I treated myself to two of my favorites: an iced cherry almond latte and an almond croissant.

20170604_150801276_iOS

Right before Ben turned one we transitioned him to cow’s milk. The transition went fine; however, he was still relying on milk to be the primary source of his calories. While he was eating solid foods pretty well he was drinking way too much milk. Without simply stopping offering him so much milk I really had no idea how to make the abrupt adjustment. I eased into it and on Sunday he dropped from 35 ounces of milk to 25 ounces! It was really like ripping off a bandaid.

{Feeding himself with a sippy cup!}
{Holding the sippy cup himself!}

After Ben’s morning nap instead of giving him a bottle right away I plopped him in the stroller and we went up to the park for a picnic. The distraction + solid food made him seem to forget that he usually gets a bottle at that time. That was the first day we only gave Ben 4 bottles. Mom victory!

{Not-so-victorious move: giving 12-month old an open container of Cheerios...}
{Not-so-victorious move: giving 12-month old an open container of Cheerios…}

We had such a wonderful weekend together. While I wished that Alex could have joined us it’s nice to sometimes have those opportunities to challenge yourself and have to think creatively of how to handle a situation, and handle it with grace. Here’s to many more big and small victories to celebrate!

Ben is 12 Months Old!

We celebrated Ben’s first birthday last week. It was quite a momentous occasion with our family trip to the mountains followed by a casual birthday evening complete with burgers and ice cream. This week kicked off with Ben’s 12-month checkup and a follow-up visit at the eye doctor.

20170531_141302736_iOS

For the first time ever in his life, Ben is officially in the 10th percentile for weight {he was born waaayyy below the 1st}! We were so excited to also hear that Ben’s head grew a ton, too. In his 9-month checkup his head was in the 3rd percentile and now it’s in the 25th percentile.

20170521_184915214_iOS

Ben’s Stats:

  • Weight: 19 pounds 13 ounces (10th percentile)
  • Height: 28.5 inches (about the 18th percentile)
  • Head size: 45 centimeters (25th percentile)
  • Number of teeth: almost 3
{My friend Nicole sent me this picture of Ben at story time on his birthday. Our nanny took him there. Nicole shared with me that the whole group was singing "Happy Birthday" to Ben. I really wished I could have been there to see that sweet moment.}
{My friend Nicole sent me this picture of Ben at story time on his birthday. Our nanny took him there. Nicole shared with me that the whole group was singing “Happy Birthday” to Ben. I really wished I could have been there to see that sweet moment.}

The visit to both doctors went very well and we got a great report. Ben is developing as a normal 12-month old kid should be. That’s music to any parent’s ears! Ben got his 12-month shots {MMR, Hepatitis A and pneumococcal booster} which we’re really happy about {though it was quite painful for Ben}, given the current measles outbreak, and he got a blood draw to check his hemoglobin. His iron levels were slightly low, which is common in preemies and breastfed babies, so we have to give him some iron supplements.

20170602_023844246_iOS

Development-wise, Ben is so close to standing unsupported. He keeps testing his balance more and more and he’s at about 10 seconds of standing without holding onto anything right now. It’ll come soon enough!

20170605_165631386_iOS

20170521_142634135_iOS

This last month has been so fun. Every month is my new favorite age. Ben has such a sweet, infectious personality. His little coy smile is so endearing and then when he giggles {always at the dog!} it’s impossible not to laugh, too. I love watching Ben move from one toy to climb something and back to a different toy and then across the room to climb something and then over to mama or dada for a quick cuddle and then back to being on his own. It’s just such a fun age.

20170511_182300729_iOS

We were really excited for Ben to get some new toys for his birthday because we knew that his baby toys weren’t keeping him entertained and weren’t developmentally appropriate anymore. He got some really fun stuff for his birthday and it’s been so cool to watch him check out his new toys and figure them out.

Ben has a four word vocabulary – he can say dada, mama, dog {usually “dog dog”} and yum. Per the doctor’s request, we’re going to start working on identifying objects and body parts. Ben’s homework was to be able to point to two body parts on command at his 15-month checkup.

20170508_142210260_iOS

This last month Ben and I got together with two of my favorite nurses who took care of me when I was in the antepartum unit of the hospital during the last four weeks of my pregnancy. Kay and Katy were spectacular nurses and it was such a pleasure to spend a couple hours with them so they could get to know Ben. I will be forever grateful for the care I received while I was awaiting Ben’s birth. We also keep in touch with Ben’s primary nurse, Megan, from the NICU, but she moved to Colorado for the summer.

20170519_184625107_iOS

Ben has been much more engaged in reading these last few months. He has some strong preferences for books! His favorite is “The Pout Pout Fish” and he makes a good pout pout face:

20170519_153105715_iOS

Ben’s eating habits have really taken off in the last six weeks or so. He is starting to feed himself much better and really take in calories. He has been relying on milk too much, though we’re starting to taper off and transition to him getting his calories primarily from food. He absolutely loves meat and cheese, which is not surprising in the slightest, given his parents’ preferences.

{Ben's birthday breakfast!}
{Ben’s birthday breakfast!}

We are having a blast with our little boy and wishing we could spend all of our time with him. With summer on the horizon we’re looking forward to trying out our new hiking backpack, taking Ben to the beach, lots and lots of swimming, more picnics in the park and exploring the city with our new toddler.

Happy Birthday Ben!

A year ago today we got to meet our little boy. It’s been the most incredible year of my life and it is such a privilege to be able to be Ben’s mom and watch him grow up. Every day is more fun than the last. I can’t even imagine what we’re in store for during Ben’s second year.

As a 12 month old, Ben is expressive, happy, wiggly, cuddly, giggly, curious and animated. He rarely sits still for long – Ben loves to be on the move, and boy is he fast! He is really close to being able to stand unsupported. He weighs 19 pounds 10 ounces and is juuuuust shy of the 10th percentile for weight.

Here are some of my favorite photos that tell the story of Ben’s first year of life:

{Being born 7 weeks early meant that Ben had to spend his first 26 days in the NICU. When he was in the NICU he always had his arms up and we joked that he looked like he was lounging at the beach. Here he is shown with heart monitors, temperature sensors, a temporary IV and a feeding tube. He had an oxygen and breathing monitor on his foot too. His diaper was so big here!}

Very early on Ben got to meet his grandparents and has seen them several times this year even though they all live in the Midwest. He met his Aunt Alina and then Uncle John shortly thereafter, too.

{This is one of my favorite photos summarizing Ben’s first year. Our greatest challenge with Ben was feeding him. It’s what kept him in the hospital so long and it remained a challenge for his first 9 months of life. I love the beauty behind this photo, but also the story behind it.}

Ben’s First Birthday Celebration

To celebrate Ben’s first birthday, his grandparents and great grandma joined us for a long weekend in the mountains. We rented a big house in Leavenworth and spent the whole weekend spoiling little Ben. It was the perfect way to celebrate our little boy’s first birthday.

Our families flew in from the Midwest then we drove about 2.5 hours through the Cascade Mountains to Leavenworth where we set up shop for Memorial Day weekend. Our trip was really low-key and we spent most of it hanging out at our home base.

My dad surprised us with some fun outdoor toys like this blob bed and a hammock. We had fun testing them out and relaxing in our new outdoor toys.

Jackson was in doggie paradise the whole weekend. He is a country dog at heart and loves to roam around off leash. In all honesty he behaves better off leash than on.

There was a family fire safety event taking place at the fire station, two blocks away, so we took a short stroll over there to check it out. Ben got fitted for a bike helmet {to wear in a bike trailer attached to Alex’s bike} and he got to sit in a fire engine!

One afternoon we headed into downtown Leavenworth for lunch and a little meandering. We ate at our favorite spot for sausages and did an olive oil/balsamic vinegar tasting. Ben loves sausage and had a great time pairing the sausage with the giant pretzel we got to share.

Saturday evening we had Ben’s birthday celebration. We had my dad’s famous burgers and potato salad, followed by a Bavarian black forest cake for dessert. Ben was hanging on by a thread through dinner and managed to hold it together while eating the burger and potato salad. By the time we brought out his cake, though, he was done…

The End of an Era

Full disclosure: this post is entirely about pumping and breast milk. It may not be for you, though you may learn something from it or build more empathy towards new moms, so I’ll let you decide if you’d like to continue reading.

Ben never figured out breastfeeding and as a way to still provide him the nourishment from breast milk I exclusively pumped for him. I wouldn’t have been able to do this without Alex’s support. It was also extremely helpful to have a good friend who was also exclusively pumping for her twins. If she could manage two babies and produce enough milk for both of them I figured I could do it for one!

20170519_030530981_iOS

Tonight I pumped for Ben for the last time. I’ve spent an average of 3 hours a day for the last 359 days pumping. Sometimes I pumped at work, other times while getting ready in the morning or, awkwardly while driving. Sometimes I did it on the floor in Ben’s room while he was playing – after he could move he would wiggle over to me and try to pull out the tubes or chew on the pumping parts. Sometimes I pumped in bed, half asleep, watching Netflix. I spent hours pumping at Ben’s bedside when he was in the NICU last summer. I pumped in the middle of the night every night {sometimes twice} for the first five months of his life. Pumping was a part-time job.

I spent 34 days of the last year pumping. It floors me to have realized I spent more than an entire month out of the last year attached to my pump. Thinking about it like that makes me realize what a sacrifice it really was. It became so habitual I simply planned my days around it and that was that.

Over those 829 hours, I produced 9,403 ounces {278,080 ml} or 73.5 gallons of milk {now that makes me feel like a cow!}. While I wasn’t able to keep up with Ben’s demands past 9 months I am so grateful that my body was able to produce so much milk for him.

If I had to go back and do it all over again I absolutely would. Especially in the beginning of his life we saw tremendous benefits and I think some were as a result of Ben having breast milk. I do hope that someday I’ll be able to experience true breastfeeding. But, if not, I’m not afraid of formula and I’ve already exclusively pumped once, so I can surely do it again.

~

Recently I learned of several acquaintances and friends who had premature babies. All of these mamas ultimately had to exclusively pump, at least for a while. It made me reflect on my year of pumping and I have a few pieces of advice:

  • The beginning is really hard. REALLY hard. The amount of time, mastitis, blocked ducts and the newness of everything can start to take its toll on you, especially when you couple that with the fact that you really can’t easily feed your baby and pump simultaneously {nor can you pump and hold your crying newborn}. Waking up {twice} in the middle of the night to pump sucks and your life at this point truly revolves around pumping.
  • It gets easier and then it gets harder. The farther along you go, the more your life normals out and the harder it is to squeeze in those five or six pumping sessions during the day.
  • Get two hands free pumping bras. Stick with the hospital grade pump. If your insurance doesn’t cover it you can still rent one and pay out of pocket {rental in Seattle is about $75/month – I rent mine from Village Maternity at U Village}. Buy several sets of pumping parts – I have 5. Use the dishwasher instead of hand washing them. I love this wet/dry bag for dirty pumping parts to corral them on the go.
  • Be sure to test your milk by smelling it the first time you freeze it. Pop a bag of milk in the freezer, thaw it and smell it. It should smell like nothing. If it smells soapy – you’re unlucky like me and you have an excess of lipase, which means your kiddo probably won’t drink your frozen milk. You can still donate it. Sorry – it really, really, really sucks.
  • If you get to the point where you’re going crazy from pumping, re-evaluate why you’re pumping and if it’s worth it to you to continue. There’s always the option to provide part breast milk and part formula if you want to simply pump less.
  • KellyMom is a fantastic resource for pumping and breast feeding. In Seattle, the Lytle Center offers terrific lactation consultants. I loved Emily Pease.

Good luck mamas! You can do it!!
