Ben is Six Months Old!

Our little boy is officially half a year old! It’s pretty incredible to think back on all of the milestones he’s hit in the last six months and how far he has come, and especially how many obstacles he’s overcome. All is well in our little family, but here’s what Ben is up to these days…

20161204_012245258_ios

As a six month old, Ben weighs 14 pounds, 12 ounces and is 25.5 inches long. He’s in the 7th percentile for weight and skyrocketed up to the 18th percentile for height {up from about the 6th percentile at 4 months!), which we’re pretty excited about. Ben had his six month checkup and all is well. He is meeting all of his 6 month developmental milestones. He’s fully vaccinated for a 6 month old and we are very grateful for that, though the poor kid won’t agree today after four needle pokes in his thighs! {Note: we weighed him at home last week and weren’t super precise so the 15 pounds in the sign, below, is a bit off!}

20161204_003907383_ios

In the last month, Ben has turned into a completely different baby than he was at the start of November. When he turned five months he wasn’t rolling onto his tummy yet, and now that’s basically the only place he wants to be {that or working on sitting up}. He has even started sleeping on his tummy {of course on his own, and yes, we still put him to bed on his back}. This has posed some challenges in the last week, as it’s both new for him and he keeps wedging himself into the side of the crib and getting stuck.

20161204_013616265_ios

Until we left for Illinois, Ben was sleeping through the night fairly consistently, but since we left for our Thanksgiving trip, we’d been up with him in the middle of the night more than we ever have before. Part of that was because we were staying in a new place and we didn’t want Ben to wake the whole house up, so we got up more frequently than we would have at home. For the 10 days since we returned from Illinois we’d get up anywhere from 3-8 times a night, and Ben’s days have been starting at 4:30 a.m. He has a super solid internal clock and it was stuck on central time for 10 days after we got home. Thankfully, though, as with most things, this has passed and Ben has gotten more comfortable on his belly and has slept until 6 a.m. the last two nights.

20161129_161339000_ios

Since Ben has been preferring his tummy he has also learned that he can scoot a little bit. He’s been sticking his bum up in the air and doing some scoots. He is really starting to get some moves on him! He doesn’t go very far yet, but I have a feeling that’s going to sneak up on us…

20161204_225245407_ios

Last week we started introducing solid foods to Ben. I have been really excited to hit this milestone. I love to cook and I’m so excited for Ben to be eating more than just milk. It’ll be slow and steady for a while, I’m sure, but it’s been really fun to start offering him food.

20161204_192139019_ios

So far Ben has tried banana, oatmeal, apple and avocado. I think everything except banana is pretty equal to him. He wasn’t wild about the banana when we first offered it, so we’ll have to keep trying.

20161129_024526871_ios

Just in the last week he has started enjoying being in his high chair, too, which is really handy. Since about 2 months old, Ben has hated being confined in anything, which makes things a little tricky from time to time. I’m really excited to have him hang out in the high chair while I’m in the kitchen getting a meal ready.

20161204_192137151_ios

Lately Ben has been really interested in Jackson and Henry. He’s been reaching out to pet them. It’s absolutely adorable!

20161119_005837124_ios

I mentioned this a couple times before, but Ben loves to read! He studies the pictures and seems to really enjoy the storyline too. I went a little wild and got a bunch of Christmas and winter-themed books and have been having so much fun reading him some of my favorite kids Christmas books and also reading some new favorites. One of my new favorites is “How to Catch Santa” – it’s adorable!

20161203_013105173_ios

Ben was late to the giggling party. We have been desperately trying to get Ben to giggle for us for months. Finally he truly did it! We had heard little glimmers of giggles for a while but never a full-on giggle. He hasn’t done it too many times since, but we’re definitely counting it. There are few sweeter sounds than your baby giggling!

20161203_021636646_ios

While Ben has been teething for more than two months now he still has a whopping zero teeth. We felt at least one of his teeth popping through, but then it receded again. I’ve heard it’s really common for teeth to poke through and then pop back down again and keep doing that. Hopefully it won’t tease Ben too much.

20161128_181633465_ios

Ben’s demeanor continues to be very easy-going. He is really smiley and social, especially meeting new people. He loves to flirt! He’s been quite the chatterbox lately – he either makes coos or pterodactyl sounds. Being outside, going for walks, seeing himself in the mirror and reading stories are some of his favorite things to do.

20161128_224138725_ios

Now that we’ve got half a year down, I am really interested to see what the next 6 months look like and where we’re at when Ben turns one. I have a feeling life is going to change on a weekly basis around here as things keep getting more and more exciting!

Thanksgiving in Illinois

This year we spent Thanksgiving in Illinois. Alex has such a big family, and our only living grandparent, so we figured it would be a good time to introduce Ben to his extended family in Illinois.

{Nana meeting Ben for the first time!}

We spent the week of Thanksgiving with Alex’s parents at their home in Illinois and had the opportunity to introduce a ton of family and friends to Ben.

When there wasn’t family or friends over, Ben’s grammy and Grandpa Stan, along with Aunt Alina and Uncle Alberto, got a chance to play with him.

{Donna did such a nice job setting up a room all for Ben! It made it so much easier for us to travel knowing that there would be a pack 'n play, changing table, car seat and stroller waiting for us in Illinois. It helped that Alina will soon be using all of that gear, too!}

Our Thanksgiving Day was very low-key. Alex and I snuck out to take a run together while Ben was napping {of course there were several able bodied adults there in case he woke up} and spent the rest of the day around the house. Alina and Alberto had some friends over for the evening and Alex’s uncle came by as well, but otherwise, that day was really nice to get some quality time with Alex’s immediate family. The Thanksgiving meal was terrific as well! 🙂

As it always does, the trip flew by and before we knew it we were back in Seattle!

Ben’s First Plane Ride

We returned from our weeklong trip to Illinois for Thanksgiving and that means that Ben has taken his first plane ride!

20161121_180156146_ios

Before our trip we put a lot of consideration into how to make the travel experience as easy as possible. I think our research paid off because everything that was within our control went very smoothly.

20161121_203525882_ios

One of my favorite parts of flying with Ben is that he’s such an easy-going, happy kid and every time someone would look at him or smile at him he would get a gigantic toothless grin and flirt right back. It was absolutely adorable! He’s such a smiler 🙂

20161125_212821752_ios

We checked our luggage, had TSA pre check, didn’t have to bring the “big extras” like a car seat or pack ‘n play, had a very well-stocked diaper bag and carried Ben through the airport in the baby carrier. We also optimized our schedule and chose the least popular travel days during the Thanksgiving holiday. Overall, our travels were uneventful. We had a couple minor delays both ways – we had to taxi forever and a day at O’hare and then we had a bit of a delay getting out of O’hare on the way home.

20161126_011908196_ios

Ben slept almost the entire way to Illinois and hardly at all on the way home. On our return flight he was really calm and chatty, though. Sometimes when he’s chatty he’s really loud and it sounds like he’s screaming so we assume most people around us chalked that up to a screaming baby. I suppose they’re not wrong, but I’ll say he was screaming with joy.

20161121_191304463_ios

We’re certainly not in any hurry to take another trip with an infant, but I’d say it went really well. And now we’ve got his first plane ride out of the way……

Our Big Kid

There have been some moments over the last few weeks where we’re really realizing how big Ben is getting to be. It is so fun to watch him develop and grow and get some meat on his bones. It’s hard to believe he’s going to be starting to eat solid foods any day now!

20161114_164503986_ios

These little moments always take us by surprise when we see Ben do something new or look at him in a different way or try him in a different outfit or when he outgrows something that used to be too big for him. {He’s still in 3-6 month clothing and unless he goes through a major growth spurt, he does have a bit longer in this size, especially the pants. Some of the tops are getting to be a little snug in the length. I think we’ve still got another few weeks. I’m really excited about his 6-9 month clothes, though!}

20161113_174335565_ios

I absolutely cannot believe we are two weeks away from starting to offer solid food to Ben! I can’t wait for him to try food. I have a feeling he’s going to take to it pretty well, though it might be a little while before he adjusts to the concept.

20161106_182058394_ios

This kiddo is working on sitting up. Unreal. I’m really not sure when that happened, but it’s happening!

20161113_020715166_ios

The other day I put Ben in these fun two-piece skiing jammies. Normally Ben’s jammies are one piece and for some reason we think he looks like such a big kid in these PJs.

20161110_151130454_ios

Ben is actively moving around his mat {either rolling – mainly just to his side – or doing some really laborious scooting or turning} to get to toys and will lay on his stomach and reach for them. He certainly has favorite toys and he has a preference at a certain point in time for which toy he wants.

20161114_000020866_ios

I know we’ll look back on these teeny tiny developmental milestones fondly and remember what a difference so many little changes made. It’s been so fun to watch Ben grow and develop from an itty bitty baby into a relatively normal size 5 month old!

Precious Moments

Both Alex and I learned right off the bat the importance of quality time versus quantity of time with Ben. That has been a valuable lesson in going back to work and balancing our careers with being parents. It makes the precious little moments that more meaningful…

20161113_022852135_ios

Reading to Ben is one of my favorite things to do. He LOVES reading. It is so much fun. There are days when we get through more than 10, if not 20, books per day. My “guilty pleasure” in terms of buying too much stuff for Ben is that I buy way more books than any kid needs. There could be worse things, right?

20161113_001924794_ios

This smile. It gets me every time. This kid absolutely melts my heart.

20161111_165246233_ios

Ben loves taking baths. He is completely calm and content in the tub. Lately he’s been sticking one of his feet up on the side of the tub and totally lounging. It’s adorable. I love wrapping him up in a big fuzzy towel with an adorable hood on it after he comes out all squeaky clean. He is too cute! 🙂

20161104_162058766_ios

This is what real life looks like in our house.

Our “hang out” spot is on the floor in Ben’s room. Alex and I get such a kick out of watching the smallest of developmental milestones happen right before our eyes. Sometimes the highlight of our days is laying on the floor of Ben’s room playing with toys with him. When we’re hanging out with Ben we strive to not be on our phones at all. It’s hard because I like to take pictures, which I do, but I’ve been trying not to text them out to family/friends right away because it takes away from the moment. Usually I end up forgetting to send them later, but I’d rather be more present with Ben and have him see me paying him attention to him rather than my phone.

This little boy brings us so much joy!

Ben’s First Trip to the Aquarium

Throughout the last four months since Ben has been home with us we have gone on a number of outings and adventures. Most of them have been walks around our neighborhood or at different parts of the area. We’ve done a hike and gone through the arboretum countless times. I’ve taken Ben shopping with me and he’s been carted around to wineries, restaurants, on errands and to lunch dates. Now that Ben is five months old, awake a lot and super interested in his surroundings we’ve decided to make a true effort in taking him on outings that he’d actually enjoy and that we were doing just for him.

20161113_220120340_ios

Over the weekend we took Ben downtown to the Seattle Aquarium. It is perfect for kids! Ben absolutely loved it. His eyes were wide open the entire time we were there. He was so fixated on the fish and bright lights. It was pretty neat to see.

20161113_215532661_ios

It’s so fun watching a child experience something in life for the first time. The pure wonderment of it all was the best part for Alex and me.

We’re excited to show Ben around the city and our beautiful region. We hope to get out on a fun adventure every week!

Ben is Five Months Old!

Happy Halloween! Our little dinosaur is officially five months old! This last month has been filled with big developments and exploration from a curious Ben. Every day he continues to change as he explores his surroundings and gets more and more mature. The time is going so fast and Ben’s development is really ramping up. I’ve heard from so many friends with kids that around four months it starts getting much more fun – I swear it gets more and more fun with each day that passes.

20161031_173112265_ios

One of the cool things going on with Ben is that he’s getting more hair. We’ve noticed almost on a daily basis for the last two weeks that Ben’s hair is really starting to fill in and get darker. His eyes are still blue but lately we’ve been thinking in certain light that they are starting to change colors. It would be surprising if he kept his blue eyes since both Alex and I have hazel!

20161024_174804072_ios

The last month we have seen a major change in Ben’s sleeping habits. Ben has been inconsistently sleeping through the night {3-4 nights per week} for about the last month, but in the last week he slept through the night almost every night. Right around the transition from 3 to 4 months we adjusted Ben’s bedtime. He now goes down around 7ish – we feed him, put him in his jammies, read him a bedtime story and then put him to bed. We’ve found that time to be the magic hour for Ben – earlier and it’s too early and he screams his head off, later and he’s so tired that it’s impossible for him to settle down and go to sleep. We are still feeding him again {while he’s basically asleep} at 10 and then he usually sleeps until 6 or 6:30. It has been really nice for us to get to eat dinner together and then either have time to spend together or getting a few things done in the evenings.

20161024_010853113_ios

During the day Ben’s naps are evolving too. He wakes up at 6:30 a.m. and hangs out for an hour to an hour and a half then takes a 30-60 minute snooze. From then, he’s up until close to 10:30 a.m. Lately he’s been taking his long nap in the morning and then spends most of the afternoon awake with one to two short naps before his dinner at 6ish.

20161029_134731219_ios

We’ve found a really great routine for feeding Ben and for his naps. It is fairly flexible depending on the day and it works really well for our family and gives us a bit of predictability.

{Skyping with Grammy and Aunt Alina!}
{Skyping with Grammy and Aunt Alina!}

Ben has been eating really well lately. As soon as the level 3 nipples arrive from Amazon {hopefully today!} we’ll test them out with him. They have a little faster flow. Right now Ben is eating up to 6 ounces per meal and around 29 ounces {845 milileters} per day. We are planning on starting to introduce solid food to Ben in December, after he turns 6 months old.

20161031_165833656_ios

In other, more exciting news, Ben is working on sitting up! I’m fairly certain that unless it’s by accident Ben will be sitting up by himself before he rolls onto his tummy. He is so happy rolling from back to side that I don’t think he has any desire to get onto his tummy. Maybe that will change once he is able to grab things from being on his belly. For now he is only reaching for things on his side or back, but he will roll from back to side to reach for a toy.

20161029_132142577_ios

Lately {about the last week} we have noticed that Ben really strives to be sitting upright and can actually pull himself up into a seated position. He doesn’t quite have the strength to hold it unsupported for more than a few seconds but he is really working on it.

20161029_163703396_ios

Ben is a super happy, laid back kiddo. He loves looking at himself in the mirror and playing “airplane” where you raise him up over your head. We are still desperately trying to get him to giggle – he’s done it once or twice and yesterday was making sound suggesting he was getting close…

20161028_161513066_ios

While there aren’t any teeth poking through yet, Ben is definitely teething! He’s got two little tooth buds that appeared about a week ago under the surface on the bottom of his mouth. It’s going to be so fun to see his teeth appear! For the most part he’s doing really well with teething but there have been a few days that he seemed really uncomfortable. He drools quite a bit and is obsessed with sucking his thumbs, fingers, entire hands or your hands. Sometimes he shows interest in teething toys and his pacifier but he calls the shots.

20161031_173040017_ios

Ben is wearing 3-6 month clothes solidly now. He fits into that size in all of the brands that we have. A few things are a little long, but for the most part it fits really well.

20161031_173902340_ios

It has been fun to watch Ben outgrow various things over time. Most recently, Ben started boycotting the bassinet on our stroller and the inward facing baby carrier. We replaced the bassinet with the big kid seat for the stroller, so now Ben can look out and see the world. Our nanny pioneered the forward facing position in the baby carrier and Ben loves it – he never liked facing in with the carrier but he hasn’t complained about facing out.

20161029_231036698_ios20161028_212609767_ios

Lately Ben has been SUPER interested in books. That has been extremely fun for me – I love kids books, but man are there a lot of really dumb children’s stories. Also, I never realized how nonsensical and ridiculous nursery rhymes are, but they really are awful! Ben loves them – I think it’s the rhythm and the rhyming. Our new favorite is “The Barnyard Dance.”

20161025_145115667_ios

It has been such a fun month with Ben. He is doing very well and we are loving watching him grow and develop. It really keeps getting more and more fun!

Time in the Kitchen

I’ve had a lot of people ask if I’ve been able to find the time to still cook since Ben was born. The easy answer is yes! It’s not always easy and I opt for different types of meals now than I did before Ben was born, but I still cook dinner every night that we’re home.

20161024_015715634_ios

Before I went back to work I found a new menu planning template to work and I LOVE how it’s formatted. Most templates have you plan out every day’s breakfast, lunch and snacks, but that’s just not my style – I’d rather have a week of ideas for breakfast and lunch, but plan out the dinners for each night of the week with a little more intention.

20161025_041056692_ios

This new menu has been working really well. I usually have themes for my dinners – I’m trying to do a Mexican dinner, an Asian night and sometimes a pizza night each week. Mexican offers great versatility with lunches the next day or use in leftovers/making something new later on in the week. Asian is our favorite and we love making homemade pizzas. I’ve also been pulling out my slow cooker more and more – it’s too handy not to!

Over the weekend while Alex and Ben were out at their “guys day” with two other dads and their babies {4 babies to 3 dads!} I spent quite a bit of time putting together some freezer meals – I made a bunch of breakfast sandwiches and waffles to be able to pull out and pop in the oven on a busy morning.

20161022_203328812_ios

Here are some of my recent {and all-time!} favorites/go-to dinners:

The Latest Happenings

Life has gotten a lot busier since I’ve been back to work. We are really getting into a groove though and I feel like we’ve got a really good foundational routine that is easy for us to adapt to whether it’s a workday for both Alex and me, a workday for Alex but a “mom” day for me, or if it’s a weekend. It makes our days go much smoother when we all know at least a little bit of what to expect {though with an infant you never really know what’s coming…}

20161023_171747425_ios

20161015_005023308_ios

The biggest thing going on right now is that Ben is teething. Hardcore teething. He’s got a little toothbud right under the surface and judging by the drool and his disposition as of late it’s got to be ready to cut through any day now.

{Apologies in advance if your Christmas card is a picture just like this - this was what Ben looked like from my vantage point in half of our recent photos from our photo shoot. The other half were of him screaming.}
{Apologies in advance if your Christmas card is a picture just like this – this was what Ben looked like from my vantage point in half of our recent photos from our photo shoot. The other half were of him screaming. Note to self: don’t wake a baby from a nap for a photo shoot!}

He’s a trooper and most days it doesn’t bother him too much, but today was an exception to that, it seemed. One positive, though, about him teething is that he’s loving putting his hands and his toys in his mouth and that’s really improving his hand-eye coordination and overall dexterity. He’s been more able to soothe himself in his crib lately.

20161024_174804072_ios

Ben has been enjoying tummy time a lot more over the last 6 weeks or so. He’s holding his head up so high and sturdy. It’s so fun to see the slight improvements he continues to make over time.

20161023_002434190_ios

Still no sign of rolling all the way from back to tummy yet. I’m starting to think this one may take a while. Ben’s favorite position these days is on his side and I don’t think he cares to get from his back to his tummy – he stops on his side and is quite content there! Both Alex and I are positive that he could roll all the way onto his tummy, but it seems like that one may not come for a little while.

20161019_010541393_ios

I’d say over the last two weeks we’ve caught Ben more on his side than his back in his crib – he rolls to his side, finds his hand and sucks his thumb like crazy. It’s adorable. He has become more adept at moving around in his crib and not getting bothered by having his foot hit/poke through the slats in the crib walls like he used to.

{Side note: how cozy does he look!? I love these sleep sacks!}
{Side note: how cozy does he look!? I love these Swaddle Designs sleep sacks! They are WAY better than the Halo sleep sacks.}

Last week, kind of by accident, we figured out {by way of the nanny} that Ben is ready for and loves the carrier in the front-facing position so that he can see out. Our carrier can have him face in towards me or out towards the world and it advises you to wait until 5 months to face him out, but we were about 10 days from Ben being 5 months when the nanny tried it out, so I didn’t put up a fight. He’s also getting ready to transition out of the bassinet on his stroller into the seat. He is so interested in his surroundings at any given time that he does not like to be confined!

20161021_191727072_ios

Over the last few weeks Ben has been SO interested in reading. I think he loves the pictures in the books but he also seems to love the intonation in our voice when we read. Some of our favorite books are “The Barnyard Dance”, “Boss Baby” and “Pout Pout Fish” – Ben loves nursery rhymes, as of today, but I’m left wondering who in the world came up with the words!?!?! I got a bunch of seasonal and holiday books for the upcoming holidays/seasons and we’re having fun with those too.

20161024_201151613_ios

Henry and Jackson have been spending a lot of time together lately. Henry has been slowly warming up to Ben and almost seems interested in him at times. Though Jackson gets just as much, if not more, attention as he did before Ben was born he is totally jealous of the fact that Ben gets more attention than he does. Some days he has a hard time not being the center of attention anymore. Even so, he adores Ben and loves being close by.

Speaking of Henry – Ben got to meet his second cousin Henry last week! My cousin Chris and his wife Heidi have an 18 month old son named Henry and they live in Seattle just a few miles away. It took 4 months, but Ben and Henry have finally met now! And soon Ben will have a little girl second cousin too – Henry is going to be a big brother this spring! {Side note: Ben looks WAY more enormous in this picture than reality!!}

Life is more and more exciting by the day. Our little Ben is keeping us on our toes and it’s hard to remember the days before he was born – everything seems so normal now.

Morning Cuddles

I wouldn’t really consider Ben to be the cuddliest baby on the block {hint: there are no other babies on the block}. Sure, he likes to be held, but cuddled, not so much. It’s rare/unheard of for me to pick Ben up and go sit in the rocking chair and just snuggle. In fact, the first time it ever happened was yesterday!

There have been a few times I’ve managed to sit and read a couple pages of a book {never a full book, though!} in the rocking chair and I get lots of midnight cuddles after he falls asleep while eating {this makes getting up in the middle of the night easier!}, but there’s something about simply sitting and cuddling that doesn’t do it for Ben. I’m hoping that he’s turning a new leaf 🙂

Now that I’m back to work three days a week I am much more rushed those three days and I don’t get to spend as much time with Ben as I’d like. It makes our Mondays and Fridays extra special since we get to spend them together. We had some really special moments yesterday!
