Arizona Trip!

We met Alex’s family down in Arizona for a long weekend getaway last weekend. Alex’s parents, his sister, our brother in-law and their new baby, Nico, joined us in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area for some family time in the sun {and, as it turned out, the rain!}.

It’s so much more complicated flying with an infant. We had so. much. stuff. There was Ben’s suitcase, Alex and I consolidated into one larger suitcase, the diaper bag, the backpack with my breast pump and equipment, the car seat, the stroller and little Ben! Logistically it takes longer to get through the airport, too, because I needed to pump while we were there, so that takes a solid 35 minutes. We didn’t time it perfectly, but it worked out okay.

{The joys of pumping!}
{The joys of pumping!}

Our flight itself was rather uneventful. Ben fell asleep right around the time we began taxiing… and then woke up promptly when the beverage carts came out about 30 minutes later. The rest of the flight he was awake. We sat next to an extremely nice woman who was very sweet with Ben. He’s a super wiggle worm so he kept us on our toes the whole flight keeping him entertained in our arms. Overall he did really well and kept the folks sitting near us engaged with his giggles, constantly moving legs and flirty eyes.

We were so excited to get to meet our nephew Nico! He was born on Christmas Eve and turned two months old on our trip. He’s such a cutie and was so laid back. He is very observant and when he was awake he’d be bright eyed and hanging out.

The weather the first couple days was really nice. It was quite cool for Arizona {low 60s} and sunny. Thankfully the sun was extra warm and we managed a day at the pool.

20170225_213417480_iOS

I was really looking forward to floating around with Ben in his little floatie. He loved it! Ben is such a little fish and loves splashing around in the pool. Thank heavens the pool was heated!

Our pool day was Nico’s first time swimming. Seems like he had a good time too.

We managed to have some hangout time by the pool as well.

It was really fun hanging out in a low-key environment with Alex’s family and watching Ben and Nico together. They’re so sweet. We can’t wait for them to grow up together. They are only 7 months apart in age so I hope they’ll be buddies.

20170226_050115000_iOS

Other than our pool time we didn’t have too many structured activities. We went out to eat a few times but Ben is at an age right now where it’s really not that much fun to take him to a restaurant unless he’s in the right mood. He’s not one that sits still for more than about 3 minutes and it’s not very enjoyable for someone to be constantly entertaining him rather than participating in a conversation. We prefer right now to dine at home!

One of the most fun parts of the trip for Alex and me was that Ben started crawling while we were in Arizona! It was hysterical – I set a plate of guacamole and mango salsa down on the ground for myself to eat while I was playing on the floor with Ben. He saw it and off he went to try to get some of my snack. Turns out he’s really into food!

20170224_134633971_iOS

Our hotel was great – we had stayed there before in a previous trip to Arizona. It was really nice to have our own space to spread out. Our room had a full kitchen, living area and then a separate bedroom and bathroom. We were on ground level which was also really nice for coming and going. We had a little patio that overlooked a shuffleboard, bocce ball and bags court, as well as a lounging area.

20170224_221529122_iOS

Not surprisingly, taking a vacation with an infant is far less relaxing than vacationing without one, and it’s extra hard traveling with other people and balancing the schedules and needs of several adults and two babies. Ben is pretty laid back and can really go with the flow, but he’s still a baby and he still has limits. Nevertheless, we really enjoyed ourselves and enjoyed the time with Alex’s family.

20170224_221548266_iOS

Even though the weather wasn’t as stellar as we had hoped, it worked out really well with the babies. We’re not at a point right now with Ben where lounging by the pool would be a feasible activity for too long. Plus, he’s not used to the heat and being a Seattle baby, I’m guessing he’s not going to love it.

The Happenings

February is flying by and is already nearly over! Both Alex and I have been really busy with work lately, not to mention busy trying to keep up with our growing boy. Here’s what’s been going on…

Pancakes! Eggs! Pasta! Oh my! Mr. Ben has been stepping up his game with feeding himself legitimate solid foods. He absolutely LOVED this pasta with ragu! He’d try to slurp off the sauce and loved the meat {can’t blame him – it was pretty darn good!}. It is so much fun watching him eat more “real” foods.

Most of his solid food intake still comes in the form of purees, though. He is starting to get the hang of feeding himself finger foods but doesn’t take in that much yet. It’s slowly starting to increase.

We had a snow day recently and Alex stayed home from work to play! We put on our boots and trudged up to Botltehouse for a glass of mulled wine with Ben that afternoon. It was such a treat!

20170204_194229972_iOS

Our old house is not very good at regulating heat. Since moving in we’ve re-done the heating ducts, blown in insulation in the attic and added radiant floor heat in the bathroom. We finally bit the bullet and got a smart thermostat for our house and couldn’t be happier. We have sensors in Ben’s room and downstairs in the guest room and office. The sensors help control the heat in the whole house to make it consistent and more comfortable.

Our nanny has been taking Ben to baby story time at the library once a week. I wish they had a story time while I was available to take him! She has given us really positive reports and says he loves it. They sing songs and read stories. In his hands are some little shakers, which apparently he loves! Ben is quite a talker and I heard he was enthusiastically singing along while shaking his shakers.

Back in January I joined Book of the Month Club as a way to read more novels. I absolutely love to read but was finding that I wasn’t making the time to do so. I’m halfway through January’s book {eye roll…. in all honesty, I didn’t receive it until the end of the month} “Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk” and can’t wait to receive my next shipment. “Pachinko” is my February BOTM but I added the other two novels because they sounded intriguing. Now, if only I had more time to read some parenting books and books for work, too, that would be great.

Side note: I bought my first Audible book {“Conscious Business”} for work and have been listening to it in the car. I am finding I’m getting more out of it by listening to it.

20170211_022017371_iOS

We don’t let Ben fall asleep on us very often, but recently it happened a couple nights in a row when he wasn’t feeling well. Those moments are extra precious!

20170211_174330179_iOS

Ben is sitting up like a pro! He can move himself into a seated position {as of about 8 months + a couple days – I like to keep track of these milestones!} really fast. He’s getting more and more body control by the day. He has done a couple of very teeny tiny forward movements but his crawling is limited to moving backwards.

20170211_165816209_iOS

We are absolutely loving having a rug in our kitchen. It’s so nice to plop Ben down and let him hang out in the kitchen with us. It’s been life changing!

Shoe laces and Jackson are two of Ben’s favorite things! We’re so happy that Ben loves Jackson as much as he does. I swear Jackson gets more giggles out of Mr. Ben than anyone else.

We had a lovely Valentine’s Day week {we are calling it “Alentine’s Day” because we usually celebrate Valentine’s Day a day or two late}. Ben got dressed up in his adorable Peanuts Valentine’s Day outfit and read Valentine’s books all day long 😉 Alex and I enjoyed a fabulous bottle of wine from our favorite wine region in Spain and I picked up some cupcakes. I made Shakshuka for dinner, a new meal for us both, and it was really great. Later in the week we went out for dinner at Bar Cantinetta, one of our local favorites.

20170218_184129181_iOS

Ben’s grandpa Stan came for a long weekend visit. It’s so sweet seeing the two of them together!

We are hoping for more sunny days and smiles with our little Ben in the coming days. It’s hard to believe that he’ll be 9 months old at the end of February!

Day in the Mountains

Alex’s dad has been out here for the long holiday weekend and was itching to go cross country skiing. We headed to our trusty spot at Hyak out at Snoqualmie Pass and showed him where we’ve been going this winter.

20170219_214942687_iOS

The weather was pretty good – it was rather warm. Mother Nature was having a hard time deciding whether it should snow or rain, and thankfully for us she primarily opted for the former.

20170219_210028208_iOS

We had a great day getting some fresh mountain air and stretching our legs. Now if only we had a hot tub to come back and soak in…

Ben’s First Ear Infection

We can now check the box that says Ben has had an ear infection now!

20170213_183133122_iOS

He has been such a trooper. Unless you spent the night at our house, you’d never know anything was wrong. He took this ear infection like a champ and was in a great mood all week, despite the ear infection.

20170211_021940118_iOS

The nights were a different story. He was awake a lot in the middle of the night on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights – not surprisingly. By Thursday, though, the ear infection had cleared itself up. Amazing!

Spring!

I think Punxsutawney Phil was wrong… it has felt like spring here this past week {well, except for Wednesday when it was a monsoon!}! What a treat in mid-February. There are daffodils in bloom in our neighborhood and the sun has been shining brightly. Makes me excited for summer!

20170213_230421775_iOS

I lucked out this week because my two days off were gorgeous! On Monday Ben and I went for a suuuuuper long walk and I even ran for part of it. This was the first time I had run with Ben.

20170213_231652578_iOS

I don’t have a running stroller so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I think a running stroller would be easier to push and maneuver, but ours seemed to do just fine.

20170214_220622186_iOS

Friday was just as gorgeous as Monday. Alex drove our car to work so I put my city mama hat on and decided to walk to the next neighborhood and pick up some plants to freshen up the containers on our front porch. It’s feeling like spring, after all!

20170217_174613434_iOS

It’s about 8 or 10 blocks to the garden store and we had a lovely walk there and back. The stroller makes an excellent shopping cart too. On our way back we stopped at a fabulous French bakery for mama to indulge!

20170217_181052417_iOS

Ben made a terrific supervisor when I was planting the new flowers I got. He was parked out front and loved watching me garden. I think he liked the flowers’ bright colors.

I think here in Seattle we’re in store for a bit of rain this weekend. Hopefully the sun will come out again soon and we’ll have another fabulous spring.

Another Ski Day!

Last weekend Alex and I headed to the mountains for our second ski day of the season. We timed it well because it ended up being a bluebird day {skier speak for a sunny day 😉 } – the weather was perfect and the conditions were pretty great for the most part.

20170212_203037998_iOS

Powder Bowl and the King are poking out behind us… Crystal Mountain is our absolute favorite place to ski. The terrain and opportunities are limitless! Whistler Blackcomb comes in at a very close second, followed by Jackson Hole and Snowbird. Oh, and Snowbasin is awesome too. We’re pretty spoiled with incredible mountains nearby, I guess!

20170212_204953897_iOS

Mount Rainier was out in all her glory. We saw Mount Adams, Mount St. Helens and Mount Baker, too! Everybody came out to enjoy the day.

20170212_203020053_iOS

The view from the top of the High Campbell area. This is an incredible part of the mountain to ski, but it’s experts only. I opted to not venture up there last season during my pregnancy so we had a great time exploring the terrain last weekend.

20170212_205018684_iOS

We have our nanny lined up for one more ski day in March and we are taking a week-long ski trip to Whistler later this season, as well. I’d love to get at least 5 days of skiing in this year!

Snow Day!

Today was one of those rare, magical snow days in Seattle. At our house we got around 5 inches of snow which is more than enough to shut down the city. School was closed today and so was most of Seattle. We loved watching the big, wet flakes slowly, silently fall from the sky this morning. It felt like we were inside a snow globe.

{Ready for a nap!!}
{Ready for a nap!!}

Ben is Eight Months Old

My friend Sarah recently pointed out that Ben has been alive longer than he was in eutero for! He is officially 8 months old. As most people say it just keeps getting more and more fun!

20170131_163724576_iOS

20170131_163657495_iOS

Ben hasn’t had a doctor’s appointment for a while so we haven’t gotten too many updated stats, but as of a few days ago he weighed 16 pounds 10 ounces. He has been bouncing around the 8th-9th percentile for weight recently.

20170127_190312198_iOS

Right now Ben is working on seeing how fast he can bust out of the size he’s in. He was in 6-9 month / 6-12 month stuff right after he turned 7 months old and already some of the 9 month clothes {Carter’s brand} are too small for him. He still fits into 6-12 month.

20170110_015215888_iOS

Over the last month Ben has gone through tremendous changes. One of the most notable has been sleep! He started sleeping soundly through the night about 3.5 weeks ago and hasn’t looked back. I think there have only been 3 occasions in the last 3 weeks that he’s woken up once in the middle of the night. His bedtime is 7:00ish and then he sleeps until between 6 and 7 a.m. His naps have been much more consistent and he has been putting himself to sleep for most naps. All of our hard work and consistency these last several months is really paying off!

20170127_002554246_iOS

Ben basically never sits still. That holds true when he’s in his crib too! Normally he’s not this silly, but our nanny caught him dangling his legs out the side of the crib when she put him there to leave the room momentarily. He regularly surprises us with his crib gymnastics!

20170130_021823977_iOS

Ben puts everything in his mouth these days! He’s a little drool factory!

20170131_005706197_iOS

The most noticeable milestone from this last month was that Ben started sitting up totally unsupported. He went from being really wobbly or doing the tripod sit to sitting up with control in a matter of a day. It was a drastic change that happened extremely fast. He had been really close for weeks and then one day he had built up enough core strength and determination and figured it out!

20170130_151511862_iOS

It has been so nice to plop him down on the ground in a seated position with a toy where he can hang out with a new vantage point. He’ll occasionally crash down on his head if he’s not paying attention but mostly he’s worked out how to fall with control. He is still figuring out how to get into a seated position on his own.

20170123_194633803_iOS

As expected, once he started sitting, the scooting quickly followed. Ben can scoot backwards – he seems to have about a 5 foot radius right now. Occasionally he’ll exceed that, but mostly he doesn’t go too far. We are excited to see him graduate to crawling!

20170125_161338593_iOS

Ben also graduated from his little baby bathtub to the actual bathtub now that he can sit up. He absolutely loves the water! I took him swimming last week, too. We had a blast!

20170123_222823128_iOS

Feeding Ben solid foods continues to be a highlight. It’s so fun watching him explore new tastes and textures and see him enjoying food. So far there hasn’t been anything he doesn’t like, except for maybe oatmeal. I can’t blame him though because plain oatmeal is so boring and flavorless!

20170118_154419606_iOS

Ben is a pretty vocal kid. He lets you know when he’s excited, frustrated, annoyed or simply wants to chat. He has been SO chatty lately! He’s working on “da” and “buh” sounds and repeats them with enthusiasm all day long. We’ve heard a few “muh” sounds, but definitely no mama yet. He has a habit of being a liiiiiitle dramatic sometimes. Case in point is this photo:

20170106_231935739_iOS

During the month of January Ben got to spend a little time with a few of his grandparents. Alex’s parents stopped here for a day on their way to Hawaii, then my mom came for a brief visit at the end of the month.

20170129_190911794_iOS

20170117_154316869_iOS

Last week Ben and I had lunch with Nurse Megan, who was Ben’s primary nurse in the NICU. She was so sweet to us all both in the hospital. We’re so grateful to have stayed in touch with her and it was wonderful getting together with her and showing her how well Ben is doing. He’s come a long way in 8 months!

20170127_210704868_iOS

We are loving our new kitchen rug. I wouldn’t have thought to put a rug in the kitchen but especially with Ben it is really nice to be able to plop him down on the floor in there while I prepare some food or empty the dishwasher. And that way he’s not stuck in his high chair or anything – he can be down on the ground playing and exploring.

20170127_153146005_iOS

We have a lot to look forward to now that Ben is in his 9th month. He is such a happy kiddo and we are loving being his parents!

20170122_230728806_iOS

The Happenings

It’s amazing how quickly things are changing around here. Ben is now 7 1/2 months old and I’m really pretty floored at how different things are today than they were three weeks ago when I was writing my post about him turning 7 months old.

20170118_151032234_iOS

Our daily routine is in constant flux based on what’s going on with Ben – he’s been sleeping so much better overnight {we’ve been getting 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep lately!!!!!} these last few weeks and that has dramatically changed his napping schedule. This impacts my mornings because now instead of napping from 7:30-8:15 or 8:30 he’s awake until 8:45 or so and I get to hang out with him and feed him breakfast. He’ll still take one or two other good naps later in the day.

{Ben has grown to love his high chair! It's made it easier for me to adjust to his new morning routine of being awake longer.}
{Ben has grown to love his high chair! It’s made it easier for me to adjust to his new morning routine of being awake longer.}

For quite some time Ben was practicing sitting up on his own. Sitting is so much more arbitrary than rolling over because it’s hard to determine the point where he could truly sit. We’ve called it, though, and Ben is definitely sitting now. He hasn’t gotten himself into a seated position yet, but when we plop him down he stays put.

20170119_150633788_iOS

Ben is working on figuring out how to scoot. He can move around his play mat by rolling and doing tiny scoots. He’s got a ways to go before he can crawl, but I have a feeling that’s not too far off. In preparation for Ben to be able to move we’ve purchased a rug for our kitchen to cover our splintery floor. We still need one for the hallway and we need to look into a baby gate, but I think we’ll slowly be ready for him to be on the move…

20170118_150358516_iOS

20170115_221528080_iOS

Over the weekend Ben started babbling a TON. He’s been “talking” for a long time but mostly he’ll just make noises, particularly when he’s tired. This new babbling is so sweet – he’s putting together consonants and is starting to blend sounds. A lot of them are “da” sounds, so he says “da da da da da” a lot now. It’s adorable.

20170116_184624708_iOS

As of last weekend Ben weighed 16 pounds 8 ounces {which is the 9th percentile for weight for his age}. He’s just about to bust out of the size 2 diapers. He’s wearing size 6-9 month clothing right now but some of the onesies are already starting to get tight in the length! I can’t believe it. He hasn’t been in this size hardly 3 weeks! Ben has gigantic feet – he’s wearing 12-24 month socks right now. Wonder where he gets that from… 😉

20170114_003207427_iOS

We have several friends with babies the same age as Ben and it’s been so fun to hear what they’re up to and see how differently the babies progress. About a week ago we met up with most of the families from our parents group and got to catch up with them. I actually watched one of the babies recently on the mama’s first day back to work – it didn’t go as well as I had hoped {horrible actually!}. Ben was not excited to have another baby demanding my attention and both of them had close to a 2 hour meltdown simultaneously!

20170115_210128422_iOS

20170109_164053360_iOS

Overall, Ben is a really happy kiddo. He smiles a lot and when he gets excited he kicks his feet and waves his hands. Basically he’s always moving! That’ll be interesting when he can crawl and walk…

20170106_231625485_iOS

Sometimes Ben can be a whiny baby, but thankfully not very often! Normally that happens when he doesn’t nap well, but surprisingly, a lot of times he’s able to rally and still be chipper even while tired during the day. Last Friday and Saturday were not two of those days…

20170121_193809337_iOS

A couple weeks ago we took Ben in to see an occupational therapist as a check-up from his time in the NICU. It was a very cool appointment! She basically sat on the floor playing with him deliberately to see what his capabilities and limitations were. He was SUPER tired and still managed to do well and perform within the “normal” range for his adjusted age (so that of a fresh 6 month old). He scored highest on the gross motor skills {things like picking up toys – small movements}. We almost wish she would have used his actual age to assess him because we don’t typically “adjust” his age.

20170112_172012090_iOS

We’ve been loving getting out in the mountains with Ben lately. It’s such a fun thing that we enjoy doing together as a family. Now that Ben is getting older we’re really trying to introduce him to new experiences.

20170122_231836440_iOS

20170112_215134767_iOS

Alex and I are still getting out one night a week for dinner just the two of us. It’s a really nice tradition to have and it allows us to catch up and get out of the house together. Both of us have started going out with friends a little more too – recently we both, separately, went out with some friends. It had been quite a while since I had met a girl friend for a glass of wine, but it’s happened twice this month! We’ve also both been making the time to exercise more regularly. That has been awesome! We’re really starting to feel like we’re in a good groove these days. It took a little while but I think we’ve figured it out… for now! 🙂
